Fabulous Fabularum of Helga Thoroddsen

Fabulous Fabularum of Helga Thoroddsen

I am very excited for a new exhibition opening this Saturday. Helga Thoroddsen will be doing  her first solo show at only twenty three years old. We got Lina Batov curator at Listastofan,  to tell us a bit about Helga and her exhibition Fabularum and interview Helga before her big show.   Helga chose a resonant Latin name, which derives from fabula – tale, story, play – fitting for the exhibition theme. Not surprising, it is also a feminine word, that sums up this show perfectly. Almost all of the paintings of the Fabularum exhibition are inhabited by female figures, coming from myths and legends, mostly from Icelandic folklore. As well as some pop personalities, such as Madonna, Lady Gaga and our favorite – Björk, raised to the status of divinity, depicting our modern culture in the fabric of the mythological. Her subjects make strong reference to the religious and mythical, never glorifying it, but as a statement of how religion overtook art for centuries. You may happen to recognize the artist in some of the paintings, appearing in the features of her heroines, melting into her characters. At the same extent she is painting just women, there is reverence and beauty in each of them. Helga’s paintings have something staggeringly real, at the same time they are strongly marked by symbolism, and this contrast is striking and appealing. Additionally a most pleasant thing about her paintings remains a great sense of humor. There is no pretense in her art, but a skilfully crafted sense of joy emanating from her work. It is clear that she loves people and she loves the paint brush which is wielded with skill and intelligence. Soft smiled twenty-three year old Helga comes from Selfoss and likes to think she shares her birthplace with Björk. Freshly graduated…

Sonar Reykjavík Fashion Day #3

Sonar Reykjavík Fashion Day #3

I cant believe that Sonar Reykjavik is over, The organizers have already put the early bird tickets on sale HERE!! Las night was beyond awesome and my main focus was to see Fat Boy Slim and De La Soul, who stopped in mid song to ask the crowd to put their phones down and enjoy the gig – how amazing!! It worked, our need to document EVERYTHING can be scary sometimes. The street style was not disappointing either. Saturday top picks:   Thanks to ALL of you who were kind enough to let me document their outfits. I met so many wonderful people and I hope to see you all again next year.

Sonar Reykjavík Fashion Day #2

Sonar Reykjavík Fashion Day #2

Last night at Sonar Reykjavík was such a blast. I started out by seeing Berndsen then off to Sing Fang and ending dancing like a wild child at Gus Gus and Moderat. I also made some friends along the way and snapped a photo of some of the festival goers. This time around people were dressed a bit more wildly than last night so I am way excited to see what crazy outfits I get to snap tonight.  Friday top picks: Tonight is the last and final night, I for one cant wait for the legendary Fat Boy Slim and the 22 year old rapper from Croydon, UK, Nadia Rose. See you there and I hope you all are happy with me snapping some photos of all you cool kids.

Sonar Reykjavík Fashion Day #1

Sonar Reykjavík Fashion Day #1

Sonar Reykavík is an incredibly impressive festival and I was lucky enough to get to be able to attend. This year the line up is incredible with artists such as De La Soul, Fat Boy Slim, Moderat and Tommy Genesis. I saw Tommy’s gig last night and boy was she cool. She is a young rapper from Canada and spits out oddball lyrics and is totally anti-establishment. She rocked the stage where she had Sunna Ben, from the band Reykjavíkurdætur, providing the DJ beats with such skill. In terms of festival wear, we saw a lot of multicolored hair and flashy shoes. The laid back attitude and hoodie fashion definitely stood out. My Look: I forgot to take a picture of my look for you last night but the one below was taken earlier in the day.  I was sporting pink hair, black hoodie and black & white sneakers. I will try and remember to take a photo tonight. Thursday top picks:             See you guys tonight for round two!! And if I come up to you at a concert I hope you are willing to let me take a picture of you and to show me your favorite piece!

Reykjavík Fashion Festival 2017

Reykjavík Fashion Festival 2017

Reykjavík Fashion Festival (RFF) will be held next month and we at Reykjavík Fashion & Design are way too excited about it. Yesterday RFF revealed the designers that will be showcasing this year.   Anita Hirlekar Anita Hirlekar is without a doubt one of the most exciting Icelandic fashion designers to emerge in recent years. With a keen eye for textiles, Anita Hirlekar harnesses an original vision and an extraordinary sense for fashion. Her garments pulsate with energy and they bare graphics that seem like woolen fireworks flowing throughout the silhouette of each piece. We did an interview with Anita in our next issue and we are simply in awe of what she has accomplished working with amazing design houses such as Dior And Furstenberg. ÝR Ýr Þrastadóttir is one of the most talented designers in our opinion and we at RFD have been lucky enough to have worked with her on various projects in the past. Ýr was selected out of her graduating class to participate on behalf of Iceland in Designers Nest( and international platform for Nordic design graduates) during Copenhagen Fashion Week in 2011 and has participated at Reykjavík Fashion Festival numerous times. Her designs have received rave reviews so we are incredibly excited to see what she has in store for us next. Cintamani Cintamani is an Icelandic outdoors label that has been around for over 20 years developing and designing outerwear clothing, suitable for the Icelandic weather. They are known for having a fashionable take on their designs and are now launching a brand new line at RFF designed by their brand new creative team. The label has participated at RFF before or in 2014 and are now back this year. They are known for using vibrant colors, inspired by nature. Inklaw Inklaw Clothing was…

5 tips for you

5 tips for you

Now that we are a few days into  2017 and everybody is starting their yearly health craze and trying to honor their new year’s resolution,  I thought it would be fitting to share with you my morning routine. This is something that I have done almost every morning (during weekdays ) for the last couple of years. My mornings are the most relaxing,  calm and frankly my  favorite time of the day. Wake up an hour before you have to. Who doesn’t recognize snoozing in the morning and having to rush out with a mascara applied to one eye and your sweater worn backwards? Well I have certainly been there and just by setting my alarm and hour earlier makes the morning so much more relaxed and less stressful. Don’t jump out of bed. Give yourself a few minutes after your alarm goes off, to open your eyes and lay in bed for a few minutes. We don’t always have to rush everything. Just be careful that you don’t fall straight back to sleep. Decide on what to wear the next day, before you go to bed. This makes your mornings a lot easier, believe me. I have almost created a capsule wardrobe  that consists of everything black and then I pop it up with jewelry. Drink a glass of water before your coffee. I struggle a little bit with this myself. I tend to go straight to coffee. This however is a great way to start the day and get your body up and running. Do stretches / Yoga. It doesn’t have to be a full 15 min planking and 2 x 20 jumping jacks. Just stretch your body which ever way comes natural to you, it can be as easy as putting your hands up in the air and…

5 favourite Christmas films on Netflix

December seems to have flown by so fast, I feel like I nearly missed it. This weekend is going to be all about spending time with family and catching up on some Christmas films to light that holiday spirit on fire. Here are my recommendations   1 White Christmas: Oh who doesn’t love Bing Crosby singing and dancing and bringing the cheer? This best thing about this film is that it suits kids from 1 to 91.     2 Love Actually: Ok this is just one those movies that have become on of the great films of Christmas. With multiple story lines where you feel like you can relate to them all in some way. Just a nice hot coco (or mulled wine) and your are good to go, also the cast is truly incredible, Hugh Grant, Emma Thompson,  Colin Firth, Liam Neeson, Laura Linney, the late Alan Rickman and the list goes on and on.     3 Happy Christmas: Is a coming of age dramedy of sorts, featuring Anna Kendrick as the basketcase sister that has to get her life together. Kind of refreshing seeing Kendrick in a role like that as I have somehow put her on a somewhat Disney singing – Pitch perfect – happy go lucky, pedestal.     4 Scrooged: There have been countless adaptions of the Charles Dickens tale of Ebenezer Scrooge, but this is by far my favorite. Bill Murray excels at playing the grumpy Ebenezer with his Murray magic and again this one is suitable for the whole family.     5 Die Hard 1,2,3,4, and 5: Yippee ki-yay and Merry Christmas, need I say more? (pssst I hear the Die Hard no. 6 is in the making – it will defiantly make next years Christmas movies to watch – list).    …

Food Market @ Harpa this weekend

Food Market @ Harpa this weekend

Are you a food nut ? A fan of all that is gourmet? A foodie? Well it´s that time again – Iceland´s largest artisan food market will be held at Harpa next weekend. I went last time with my sister and it was hard to resist buying something from every booth. This time there will be over 45 farmers , fishermen and all kinds of food producers – all under the same roof. You can get the chance to talk to the farmers and producers and ask them about their products – you wont find a better source than straight from the horses mouth ( no pun intended ). I look forward to checking out the products from a little farm in Hvalfjörður ( only a short drive away from Reykjavik) called Bjarteyjarsandur. It is a small family run farm that focuses on producing everything from jams and chutneys to sausages and other different kinds of meat, all in a ecological and sustainable way. I want to visit the farm next summer, it´s at the top of my list. There will be an array of different foods – everything from sweets to savory. Who knows – you might find a perfect little treat or perhaps a gift to put under the Christmas Tree.  So you people out there that interested in food or like to consume food or generally just a foodie, dont let this opportunity pass you by. I´ll see you there !!!

The Björk Digital show @ Harpa

The Björk Digital show @ Harpa

Björk is showcasing her Virtual Reality show at Harpa, this project was launched in cooperation with Iceland Airwaves and has been going on since November.  Want to see it? Well hurry up – its only on until the end of December. It takes 90 minutes, is only 2.900 ISK pr person and is well worth it !! Björk worked with some of the best filmmakers in the world, creating this musical VR experience and it is utterly fantastic. She has this knack for constantly coming up with something new and cutting edge and she certainly has come up with a new experience this time around. The exhibition gives the audience an insight into the multimedia album Biophilia, an album that is being used in the curriculum in schools in Scandinavia where the songs are turned into applications that focus on music, technology and nature. Another part of the exhibition revolves around her newest album Vulnicura. This is a very personal album that revolves around her brakeup with her long time partner and how she dealt with it and is probably still dealing with. This is something that most of us can definitely relate to, although few of us have turned it into something brilliantly creative in a form of a Virtual Reality experience. This exhibition has traveled to Japan, Australia and London and now its finally here in Iceland- so hurry up and catch it before the end of the month– you wont regret it.
