This past year has been one hell of a ride and one thing that has become very clear to me is that in order to succeed in whatever you decide to do, is to remember to take care of yourself.
I like to compare it to when travelling on a plane: “Put the mask on yourself before you put it on others”. I feel like this is true in everyday life as well. You want to be able to be there and take care of the people that you love, but you can’t do this unless you remember to take care of YOU!
Make YOU a priority
This might seem a little self involved but it really is the least self involved thing you can ever do. Figure out what makes you calm , weather it is Yoga, cooking or just walking the dog.
Another thing that seems to help me when I need to stay grounded is to surround myself with positive people. People that also take care of themselves and in general are positive. Those people tend to be the best sounding boards you can find and can help to push you to be the best you can be and also help you realize what it is you can do better. To ask for help is not a sign of weakness, it’s a sign of strength.
A really good friend of mine as this great saying: “Keep practicing your communication skills and strife to be kind to those around you” this can sound a bit trivial but I really believe it is important to treat everyone as you want to be treated yourself and not be caught in a moment of anger. That is when you might say something that you can´t take back.
Failure is great
To fail is to learn. When you fail at something it means that you tried right ? This is another important aspect in my opinion, this is how you learn. It can either lead you to a better way of doing things or to make you see that you are meant to turn your head in another direction.
Remember – you can’t decide or be in charge of how people treat you or speak to you, but you can decide on how you choose to react. If people are not able to treat you in the manner you like to be treated you have the choice to walk away. You always have the choice.
Avoid comparing yourself to others
I am a huge advocate for having role models. I have a few good ones, my family and friends mostly, that I look up to and admire. It is nevertheless hugely important to me to be careful not to compare myself to others. Focus on your own dreams and aspirations and you will have a much higher chance of reaching success.
When I started writing this it wasn’t supposed to be a “Dear diary” post but I hope that after reading this you recognize that you have the choice to be the best version of yourself.
